did you know kiwifruit can help you sleep?
Kiwifruit's contain the amino acid tryptophan, and hormones serotonin and melatonin, which are involved in the regulation of our circadian rhythm and sleep-wake cycle.
Our body’s make serotonin and melatonin naturally from tryptophan, which is found in foods like turkey, chicken, milk, cheese, yoghurt, peanuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds and soybeans.
Tryptophan, with the help of vitamins B3, B6, folate, magnesium, calcium + iron converts to 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), which then converts to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)/serotonin with the help of zinc, magnesium, vitamins B6 and C. Finally, serotonin then converts to melatonin with the help of vitamin B6 and iron.
Vitamin D, essential fatty acids (EFAs), sunlight and darkness are also involved here.
You can see how being low in, or missing any of these factors, can interrupt this important pathway.
Kiwis are also a great source of fibre, especially if you eat the skin, vitamins C, K, E, folate, potassium, copper, antioxidants and phytonutrients.
Other food sources:
✨Serotonin - plantains, pineapple, bananas, walnuts
✨Melatonin - tart cherries, eggs, milk, fish, mushrooms, oats, grapes
